Getting Started

Recently, I decided to enter the world of holographic development. I will be posting my own development journey soon but here are some great resources for getting started on your own development:

  1. Install the tools. The Hololens Emulator is especially useful if you don't have an actual Hololens unit.
  2. Microsoft's HoloToolKit: This is the starter toolkit you should incorporate in your projects. There are some great scripts and prefabs to take care of all your input needs. The Getting Started page is a must read. It's a good idea to Git sync this toolkit because it is constantly being updated by the community. Edit (3/20/18): the HoloToolKit has now been replaced by the MixedRealityToolkit, following the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (late 2017). The installation instructions are still fairly similar.
  3. Mike Taulty's blog. Great introduction videos with detailed explanation of the scripts used by Microsoft's HoloToolKit. Fair warning, the videos were created using an older version of the HoloToolKit and a major update was released in late December 2016 that changes things significantly.
  4. Abhijit's blog. Another great resource for building holographic apps with gaze and gesture inputs.
  5. Chad Carter's tutorials. Accessing the videos require a monthly membership but there is a lot of useful information once you make that investment.
  6. A general, very useful resource for all your Unity questions.
